BC Racing coilover kits for the Lancer Evolution and Galant VR-4 side by side

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Galant VR-4 Coilovers

Evo coilovers are listed by generation, so start with your chassis code. The Evo I to III is CD9A or CE9A, and the Evo IV to VI is CN9A or CP9A. The Evo VII to IX is CT9A, and the Evo X is CZ4A. The Galant VR-4 has its own listings, and none of these share kits with the regular Lancer or Ralliart.

The Evo has a deeper coilover catalogue than most cars its size. BC Racing, KW, Fortune Auto, Öhlins, TEIN, Feal, Bilstein and Ksport all list kits for it. That is good news, but it means more titles to read. This guide sorts our listings by generation, using each title's own wording. Confirm your car on the product page, or call 1-800-460-9106 with your VIN.

Evo Coilovers Start With the Chassis Code

Brands list Evo kits by generation group, and the groups line up with the chassis codes. Fortune Auto's titles show it clearly. They read Evolution 1, 2, 3 (CD9A/CE9A), Evolution 4, 5, 6 (CP9A/CN9A), Evolution 7, 8, 9 (CT9A) and Evolution 10 (CZ4A).

Year ranges differ by brand, because each brand writes its own titles. One Evo X listing reads 2008 to 2015, another 2008 to 2016, and Öhlins writes 2007 to 2015. Go by the chassis code and the listing for the exact kit you want, not a year range you saw elsewhere.

Not an Evo? Different kit.

The regular Lancer, the Lancer Ralliart and the Evo are listed separately in our catalogue. BC Racing, for example, lists a 2008 to 2017 Lancer FWD/AWD + Ralliart kit apart from its 2008 to 2015 Evo X AWD kit. Do not cross-shop them.

Evo VII, VIII and IX (CT9A)

The CT9A is the generation most people picture when they hear "Evo." Our listings cover it from every angle:

BC Racing: 2002 to 2007 Evo VII/VIII/IX AWD. Swift Springs SPEC-R springs are an upgrade option on most BC Racing fitments.

KW: 2001 to 2007 Lancer (CT9A) Evo 7, Evo 8, Evo 9.

Öhlins: the 2001 to 2007 Evo 7, 8, 9 (CT9A) Road & Track kit. Öhlins also lists an adjustable front strut mount for the Evo 4 to 9, sold individually.

TEIN: the 2003 to 2005 Evo VIII (CT9A) and the 2006 to 2007 Evo IX (CT9A). Each comes in Street Basis Z, plus Flex Z and Mono Sport listings that include the MR. One example is the 2006 to 2007 Evo IX incl. MR Flex Z.

Fortune Auto, Feal, Bilstein and Ksport: Fortune Auto lists the 2001 to 2007 Evolution 7, 8, 9 (CT9A). Feal lists the 2003 to 2007 Evo 7/8/9. Bilstein lists a B14 PSS kit for the 2003 to 2006 Lancer Evo 7/8/9. Ksport lists the Evo 8 and Evo 9 as separate kits.

Notice the small differences. KW's title starts at 2001, BC Racing's at 2002, Feal's at 2003. Bilstein's ends at 2006. Check the title for your car's year before you order.

Evo X (CZ4A)

The Evo X brought a new platform, and most brands list it as its own kit.

BC Racing: the 2008 to 2015 Evo X AWD.

KW: 2008 to 2015 Lancer Evo 10.

Öhlins: 2007 to 2015 Evo X (CZ4A) Road & Track, plus an Evo X adjustable front strut mount, sold individually.

Fortune Auto: the 2008 to 2016 Evolution 10 (CZ4A), hand-built in Virginia and custom-valved for the application.

TEIN, Feal and Ksport: TEIN lists the 2008 to 2016 Evo X (CZ4A) in Flex Z and Mono Sport. Feal lists the 2008 to 2016 Evo X. Ksport lists the 2008 to 2016 Evolution.

Already own a coilover kit and only want new springs? We also list Swift Springs Sport SPEC-R springs for the 2008 to 2016 Evo X. Swift lists Sport SPEC-R springs for the 2005 to 2007 Evo 8/9 (MR) as well.

Evo I to VI: The Early Cars

The early Evos are older cars, and our listings still cover them:

Evo I to III: BC Racing lists the 1992 to 1995 Evo I/II/III AWD. Fortune Auto lists the 1992 to 1995 Evolution 1, 2, 3 (CD9A/CE9A). Feal and Ksport list the 1992 to 1995 Evo 1/2/3.

Evo IV to VI: BC Racing lists the 1996 to 2001 Evo IV/V/VI AWD. Öhlins lists a Road & Track kit for the 1996 to 2001 Evo 4, 5, 6 (CN9A and CP9A). Fortune Auto lists the 1996 to 2000 Evolution 4, 5, 6 (CP9A/CN9A). Feal lists the 1996 to 2000 Evo 4/5/6. Ksport lists the Evo 4 apart from the Evo 5 and Evo 6.

On a car this age, previous owners may have changed parts. If anything about your car's history is unclear, call us before you order.

Galant VR-4

The Galant VR-4 is an all-wheel-drive Mitsubishi sedan with its own listings. BC Racing lists the 1989 to 1992 Galant VR4 AWD. Ksport lists the 1989 to 1992 Galant VR4 AWD too. Feal lists the 1987 to 1992 Galant (VR4).

Later Galant VR-4s are different cars. Ksport lists a 1999 to 2003 Galant VR4 AWD kit with wishbone front. BC Racing lists a 1996 to 2003 Galant FWD/AWD kit. Its title does not name the VR-4, so call us with your VIN to confirm. Do not use a 1989 to 1992 VR-4 kit on a later car, or the reverse.

Street, Rally and Track Setups

The Evo's rally pedigree is real. Tommi Mäkinen won four straight World Rally Championship drivers' titles, 1996 to 1999, in Lancer Evolutions. That heritage is why so many Evos still see gravel, autocross and track days. Our guide to rally suspension design covers what a loose-surface car needs. For how race programs feed street kits, see our piece on motorsport R&D.

Street. Pick a modest drop and a sensible spring rate. Keep enough travel for real roads, because a street Evo meets potholes and crowned surfaces. Kits with one damping adjuster keep setup simple. The BC Racing BR Series gives you 30-click simultaneous compression and rebound on one knob.

Track. Look at kits with separate compression and rebound adjustment. KW V3 adjusts both independently. KW's ladder continues to KW Clubsport and the KW Competition 3-Way; ask us which variants we can supply for your Evo. Öhlins Road & Track kits use DFV (Dual Flow Valve), and Öhlins's adjustable strut mounts add camber range. TEIN's Mono Sport is a monotube design and works with TEIN's EDFC on supported applications.

Mixed use. Fortune Auto and Feal both hand-build their kits, and Feal's focus sits close to time attack and track work. Our coilover setup guide breaks down settings by discipline.

Whatever you pick, set ride height at the lower mount on full-length kits and use the spring perch for preload. Lock each locking collar, then get an alignment. Unsprung weight is mostly the wheels, tires, hubs and brakes, so lighter wheels do more there than any kit. That is true of any performance suspension build.

Your Evo Ordering Checklist

Evo owners tend to know their cars well, but a few details still trip people up. Run through these before you order.

Chassis code and year. Match both to the listing title. Year ranges differ by brand, so check the one for the exact coilover kit you want.

Trim. Some TEIN titles name the MR. If your car is an MR, pick the listing that includes it.

What is already on the car. Aftermarket arms, mounts or sway bars can change what you need. Tell us about them.

Wheels and tires. Width and offset decide how low you can go before rubbing. There is no single safe drop for every car.

How you use it. Street, gravel, autocross and track each point to a different spring rate and damping range.

Bring that list and your VIN when you call, and we can confirm the listing in one conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Evo IX coilovers fit an Evo VIII?

Usually the same kit covers both, because most brands list the Evo VII, VIII and IX (CT9A) together. TEIN and Ksport list the VIII and IX separately, so follow the listing for your exact car.

Will Evo X coilovers fit a Lancer Ralliart?

Do not assume so. Our catalogue lists the Lancer and Ralliart separately from the Evo X, for example BC Racing's 2008 to 2017 Lancer FWD/AWD + Ralliart kit. Order the listing that names your car.

Which Evo coilovers suit track days?

There is no single answer. Kits with separate compression and rebound adjustment suit regular track use. Öhlins Road & Track, KW V3, Fortune Auto and Feal all list Evo kits. Tell us how often you run and on which tires.

Can I add Swift springs to my Evo coilovers?

On BC Racing kits, Swift Springs SPEC-R springs are an upgrade option on most fitments. We also list Swift Sport SPEC-R springs for the 2005 to 2007 Evo 8/9 (MR) and the 2008 to 2016 Evo X.

Do you list coilovers for the Galant VR-4?

Yes. BC Racing and Ksport list the 1989 to 1992 Galant VR4 AWD, and Feal lists the 1987 to 1992 Galant (VR4). Ksport also lists the 1999 to 2003 Galant VR4 AWD with wishbone front.

How low should I lower my Evo?

There is no single safe drop for every car. It depends on the chassis, wheels and tires, and on how you use it. A street or gravel Evo needs more travel than a smooth-track car. Start modest, check clearance at full lock, then align it.

Do I need camber plates on an Evo?

For a street car with a mild drop, often not. For track camber, Öhlins lists adjustable front strut mounts for the Evo 4 to 9 and the Evo X, sold individually. Ask us what your kit already includes.
